My Story
With over 31 years of playing classical guitar off and on, I can say that it’s not the easiest instrument to master. My musical journey began with the trumpet after a teacher invited me to join the school band. I had to learn the basics in just two months — and I did. That challenge set the tone for my lifelong relationship with music.
I grew up around various musical genres thanks to my parents and jazz-loving grandfathers. Over time, I began diving deeper into jazz and discovering artists who still influence me today. One of those artists was Pat Metheny, whose mind-blowing compositions sparked my fascination with the guitar.
When I bought my first guitar, I assumed classical would be a springboard to Jazz ( or I could emulate Earl Klugh); either way, I believed it would be easier to learn. I was wrong. Classical guitar is as demanding as any style but also deeply rewarding. Metheny plays electric and nylon-string guitars, but my heart stuck with classical — at least for a while.
My journey has been bittersweet. Playing the guitar — regardless of style, string count, or setup — takes work. But few things feel as satisfying as making music on a classical guitar. It’s powerful enough to stand independently and flexible enough to blend with a group.
Now, I’m shifting gears. My next goal? Learn jazz on the electric guitar.
